Aeronautical engineers apply a wide range of engineering knowledge
and skills to the design, development, manufacture, maintenance and
operation of flight vehicles and related products.
This BEng Aeronautical Engineering degree was developed in close
consultation with the South Wales aviation industry to meet their
requirements, as well as those of the Royal Aeronautical Society
Unlike some universities, there is no need to travel to an external
site to use our excellent resources. The latest addition to our
teaching facilities is an Aircraft Maintenance Training Centre, which
houses a BAe Jetstream 31 aircraft. The Centre complements our other
facilities, which include a fully instrumented wind tunnel,
educational gas turbine unit, materials testing, instrumentation and
Our state-of-the-art Merlin MP521 engineering flight simulator will
allow you to assess the handling quality of your own designed
aircraft. We also have extensive industry-standard computational
modelling software on air flow over an aircraft body and structural
stress analysis, which you will learn how to operate in the final
year. Plus, with aerospace study at Glamorgan, all costs are included
in your standard course fee.
We are currently preparing the course for an accreditation submission
to the RAeS. We have a team of well-qualified and dedicated staff with
outstanding teaching facilities to prepare you for a career in this
vibrant, research and development-intensive industry. This is
reflected in our achievement in the latest UK Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE2008) where 60% of our Engineering research outputs were
considered of ‘international excellence’.
There is a Foundation Year route (H403) available for this course.
Possible Career Options
We have strong links with the regional aviation industry, which
includes GE Aviation, BAMC, Nordam Europe, TES Aviation Group, Storm
Aviation and other members within the Aerospace Wales Forum. Our
graduates are in demand not only in the UK, but also in the civil and
defence sectors worldwide. Some of the UK-based companies with which
our students work include GE Aviation, Storm Aviation, Airbus, BAMC
and TES Aviation. Based on a survey by the Society of British
Aerospace Companies, the average salary in this sector is 44% higher
than the UK average and 31% above the manufacturing average (SBAC
Annual Survey 2007).
