Overview

Why choose this course?
You will develop a firm financial grounding for a career in accountancy, finance or general management.
Accreditation towards accounting examinations from professional bodies ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, and CIPFA.
You will gain a range of advance IT skills including Microsoft Excel and professional accounting package SAGE.
You will also have access to our Trading Room, which gives students the simulated experience of working in the fast-moving world of shares trading.
The course can be studied over three years full-time or four years with a placement.
This course meets the requirements of the CFA Society of the UK (CFA UK) as an IMC advantage programme.
Full-time students can choose to complete a short internship, study abroad, set up their own enterprise, or run a community project, during the second half of Year Two

Programme structure

What will I study?
Year One
Core modules include:

Financial Accounting
Management Accounting
Foundations of Law
Economics for Business and Management
Data Research and Analysis
Applied Accounting and Business Skills.
Year Two

First six months

All students will study core modules.

Financial Management
Financial Reporting
Management Accounting Information
Second six months

Full-time students choose one from:

Study abroad
Enterprise project
Community project
Internship
Taught modules (see below)
Placement students and full-time students that have selected taught modules above will study:

Accountability of Corporations
Forensic Accounting and Assurance
Finance in the Public Services
Taxation One.
Plus one optional module from:

International Business and Communication
Survey Research and Analysis.
Year Three
Placement year if you are on a four-year course. Students can also study abroad with a partner institution for the year, or combine both studying abroad and working.

Final year
Core modules include:

Research Project
Leadership and Employability (Accounting and Finance)
Advanced Management Accounting
Corporate Finance
Corporate Reporting.
Plus one optional module from:

International Tourism: Sustainability Development and Impact
Data Mining and Financial Data Analysis
Taxation Two.

This degree provides you with a superior level of accreditation towards professional examinations with the major UK accounting bodies.

The majority of exemptions are based upon core modules but, dependent on options taken, students graduating from BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance may be able to achieve the following:

9 out of 9 possible papers from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
7 out of 8 possible papers from the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW)
9 out of 11 possible papers from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
The course is also able to offer exemptions towards both The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Association of International Accountants (AIA).

Many have also used their degree as the basis for very successful postgraduate study. Past graduates from this course have progressed to our master’s degrees in Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Economics and Finance.

The CFA Society of the UK (CFA UK)

The CFA Society of the UK recognises the significant alignment between the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance course at Nottingham Trent University. The IMC is the benchmark qualification for the investment profession.
