In line with the Teaching and Examination Regulations, students who have not obtained a Flemish degree will need to pay an application fee of 50 euro for each application. The university makes NO exceptions for scholarship students or for students who meet the programme’s academic requirements.Enrolled students will pay the tuition fee minus the application fee of their specific programme. This means that if you enrol after a positive application, the tuition fee will be reduced with the application fee. Paying multiple application fees will not automatically reduce your tuition fee. Please note that additional costs for the bank transfer are the sole responsibility of the applicant
Undergraduate diploma (or higher)
Bachelor degree in Electrical engineering, (Applied) Physics, Material Science or an equivalent.
The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English.
Often you can get a suitable transcript from your school. If this is not the case, you will need official translations along with verified copies of the original.
If your documents are not in English, French or Dutch they have to be officially tranlsated (by a sworn translator) into one of these 3 languages

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel offers the Master of Photonics Science and Engineering jointly with Ghent University (UGent). When you enroll in this English taught master, you will follow the courses at UGent during the first semester of the first master year and at Vrije Universiteit Brussel during the second semester.
The aim of this master programme is to educate you to become an engineer and scientist with a solid knowledge in photonics and the ability to apply theory into design, realisation and management of photonic systems.
The first year will be devoted mainly to a programme of core photonics courses with essentially the same content at both institutes, complemented by a number of advanced photonics courses as well as several courses in related disciplines and transferable skill courses.
During the second year, you will study where you do your master thesis.
Your future as a Photonics Engineer looks very bright. Today photonics is a discipline of key importance in industrial sectors such as the tele- and data communication area, the display and printing industry, the biotechnology industry, the energy sector, the medical instrumentation sector… with opportunities in:
- research in high-technology companies
- research in academic laboratories and research institutes
- development of new photonic products in industry
- technical support in a company for its products
- technical marketing and sales in to photonics related industries
