Overview

The LLM by Research programme is aimed at students looking to complete a dissertation that addresses legal, academic or doctrinal work (i.e. substantive or ‘black letter’ law, or developing a socio-legal perspective). It will develop your critical understanding of legal concepts and methods, further your learning and skills related to legal problems and issues, and equip you with the skills and knowledge to compare legal systems.

As part of this degree, you will produce a 30,000 word dissertation on a topic chosen by you and approved by the School of Law.

The programme includes two taught courses designed to prepare you for carrying out this significant piece of individual research: Research Methods in Law and Foundations for Postgraduate Study and Research. You will regularly attend classes, meet with your supervisor and present seminars on your work in progress.

The Research Methods in Law course introduces the main elements of research design and methodology in law. Foundations for Postgraduate Study and Research provides tools for critical thinking and evaluation in relation to the reading and writing of texts. It focuses on reasoning and rhetoric and will help you to develop academic argument as well as to understand its limitations.
