Overview
COURSE SUMMARY
Fine Art today embraces a range of practices, from traditional
two-dimensional media to lens and time-based media, as well as
installations and web-based work. In this Fine Art course you will
address not only aesthetic issues, but also social, environmental,
political and conceptual problems. The course gives you the
opportunity to experience a range of approaches to contemporary fine
art, with an emphasis on your personal creative development.
During this course you will:
- Have access to digital photography, video equipment, computer
facilities and high-quality screenprinting - Develop your practical Fine Art skills across a range of
traditional and lens and digital media and processes - Enjoy dedicated studio space within a lively studio environment
- Have one-to-one contact with staff, with an emphasis on your
personal creative development - Enjoy experiential learning and development of professional
practice - Experience visits from a practising artist from Germany, and have
the opportunity to visit her and work in her studio - Be taught by staff who are practising artists and designers who
regularly exhibit
Areas of study you may cover on this course include:
- Studio practice, embracing painting, drawing and print-making, as
well as video, photography, digital media and installation - Visual communications skills, including drawing, screenprinting,
the use of imaging software and lens-based media - Contextual studies that link theory and practice in developing
your creative ideas - Professional practice and personal development

CAREER MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Careers development is integrated into the course and the course
seeks to provide you with an awareness of the real-world context of
the creative industries in general and fine art in particular. You
will be helped to develop a strategy for obtaining appropriate
employment at the end of your course.
Professional practice will be emphasised as part of all learning
units but a work related learning unit especially will help you to
become more focused on managing your career.
You will be helped with the preparation of a professional portfolio
as well as a CV (curriculum vitae) and material so that you can market
yourself.
CAREER/FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES
Career:
Whilst this award is principally conceived as the means by which you
might embark on a career as a practising artist it also provides you
with knowledge, skills and expertise that is highly transferable
within the creative industries. As you will be used to thinking and
working creatively and critically with a keen sensitivity for visual
communication, employment in the galleries and museums sector, public
or community arts participation or arts education is also an option.
Further study:
Specialist Postgraduate courses in fine art, photography, film making
or critical theory or education.
