Due to visa requirements the result of the language test of Non-EU/EEA students must be equal to IELS 6 or higher (with no part under 5.5).
Events don’t just happen. Art exhibitions, theatrical productions, music gigs and fashion shows need skilful, creative people to make them a reality. In this course you’ll develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to put on successful events. We’ll help you develop as a successful arts manager, able to work at the forefront of the arts and creative industries.
Theory, technique and practice will underpin each year of study. To replicate the team nature of professional arts and event management, you’ll work together on briefs to devise, develop and deliver an arts event each year. You’ll develop the creative, business and technical skills to become a successful arts and event management professional. As the course develops you’ll discover your own specialist interests and have the satisfaction of seeing the events you organise go ‘live’.
All our tutors have professional experience in arts management, cultural entrepreneurship and arts and cultural policy.
· We have regular visits from creative industry professionals with specific areas of expertise.
· We provide the resources you would expect to find in a real arts or events business, including a dedicated telephone network.
· You’ll be able to work with equipment sourced specifically for your live projects: lighting, sound, projection, staging and exhibition materials.
· You’ll visit relevant professional organizations and creative businesses, as well as events, festivals and exhibitions also take place.
· You’ll have opportunities to volunteer, network and take part in the arts in the local area.
Year 1 develops a wide range of ‘operational’ arts management skills.
· You’ll attend lectures, seminars and a series of technical workshops including design, blogging, lighting and sound.
· You’ll be introduced to the underlying principles of business, finance, accountancy, human resource management, marketing, health and safety, legal and insurance issues – all from a creative perspective.
· You’ll also gain an understanding of the range of roles and career opportunities within arts management.
Year 2 will develop your research and project management skills as you continue to plan and develop live projects.
You’ll experience professional arts management through a six-week placement within a relevant arts organization. This should increase your confidence and confirm the direction you wish to go in.
In the past, many students have built a working relationship with their ‘work placement host’ and continue to work with them long after the placement has finished.
Year 3 is more strategic and entrepreneurial – as well as working on your final major live project, you will also take a broader view of the long term planning and development of arts organisations.
· You’ll develop a specific interest through an extended academic study.
· You’ll learn to manage complexity, uncertainty and diversity, to develop a more in-depth understanding of arts project management.
· You’ll work as ‘consultants’ to an arts organization, recommending new areas of work, solutions to problems and developmental ideas.
· You’ll develop your own business plan for a creative business – for the last two years students have won the regional ‘Business Plan Challenge’
