Overview

Bringing together theory and practice, our Film and Media course draws from the University of Stirling’s legacy as a pioneer in Film and Media research and teaching.

This course not only ensures you’re well-versed in theoretical and critical aspects of the subject area, but also have the opportunity to become fully trained in practicalities such as audio production, video editing, scriptwriting and more. Our emphasis on all-round training means you’ll graduate ready to follow in the footsteps of previous Stirling students who have forged successful careers in a range of media roles – from broadcasting and publishing, to advertising and public relations

They’ve developed a course that provides our graduates with a breadth of knowledge and practical experiences that can be applied to a wide range of sport related careers. Their course is flexible – They offer a wide variety of module options and it can be combined with a range of subjects, including Accountancy, Business Studies, Film and Media, History, Journalism, Marketing, and Psychology.

You can choose from modules exploring four subject areas:

Sports Policy and Management
Physical Activity and Health
Development of Sport
Sport, Culture and Society
In addition, our extracurricular volunteering opportunities and Sport Union clubs enable you to earn qualifications and gain valuable sport management experience alongside your academic degree.

Programme structure

Year 2 explores issues and concepts in sport, reflecting on the historical development of sport, the foundations of physical activity and the psychology of sport – again with the option to study further subjects.

In addition to two core modules in Years 3 and 4 (Research Methods in Sports Studies and Readings in Sports Studies), you can specialise by choosing seven modules from:

Sport, Culture and Nationhood
PE, School Sport and Youth Culture
Sports Medicine, Health and Wellbeing
Sports Policy
Sports Marketing
Sport, Gender, Ethnicity and Identity
Psychology of Exercise, Physical Activity and Health
Managing the Business of Sport
Coaching Sports
Development of Excellence in Sport
Doping in Sport: Scandals and Policy Responses

Career opportunities

Many Film and Media students from the University of Stirling have established successful careers in media roles spanning broadcast and print journalism, television, radio and film production, media management, advertising, public relations and education.

Differentiating it from other film courses, Stirling Film and Media degree develops a broad understanding of the media industries, together with practical abilities that help make you more employable. Our graduates have won many awards in a variety of media specialisms: for instance, as BAFTA winners in investigative reporting, programme production and scriptwriting. Alumni have also received Emmy awards for visual effects production in film and TV, and Sony Gold Radio Academy awards for BBC Radio 1 documentaries.

Job opportunities include working as a sports coach; teacher; consultant; or a manager or administrator for employers such as a local authority, commercial and voluntary sport organisation or governing bodies of sport.

This course is designed to enhance knowledge and understanding of sport across a range of academic disciplines, and prepares students for a variety of careers in sport.

They work closely with industry to ensure everything we teach you is relevant, and will boost your employability within the sector. Staff actively seek positions with key sports organisations to ensure what is taught reflects contemporary issues affecting the sports industry today.
