Overview

Games Technology BSc could be your ticket into this unprecedented industry. Coders, tech lovers, programmers – we’re looking at you!
The global video games industry is predicted to reach $89 billion by 2018 (DFC Intelligence). ‘The Big Three’ players – Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo – are always on the lookout for the next breakthrough, dependent on specialised software developers with a head full of ideas, technical wizardry and a passion for gaming.

With technology and practices continually evolving in this fast-moving industry, our degree considers the challenges faced by technical practitioners within the games industry, both in the UK and internationally. Accredited by the British Computer Society, course content is dynamic, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of code design, testing and graphics that reflects all of the latest developments, while equipping you with specialist skills in programming.

At Coventry, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Games Technology lab with specialised high performance PCs and peripherals including Virtual Reality headsets and motion capture technology as well as graphics tablets. We use the latest industry standard software including Unity Games Engine, 3DS Max and Visual Studio.

The Coventry Games Technology course will give you a distinct advantage in starting your career, as evidenced by our recent graduates or internship students on placements at Microsoft, Exient, Sony and Pixel Toys.

Career opportunities

The course aims to develop key competencies in technical games production, critical analysis, application of theories and concepts to real-world scenarios, localisation and digital literacy.

This, coupled with the breadth of the subject domain, means that upon successfully completing this course you will be well positioned for a range of employment opportunities in the games industry or in the wider software industries, including software development, database/systems administration, mobile application development, web development and user-centred design to name a few.

We have an outstanding track record for graduate employability – with 91% of our students are in employment or further education six months after graduation (DLHE 2014/15). Our award-winning Faculty careers service, EEC Futures, which won the ‘Best Placement Service in the UK’ award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards in 2015 and 2016, will help you in finding work experience while you study and employment on graduation. You will also have the opportunity to engage with the New Wizards showcase, where industry visitors will come and view student projects – often leading to interviews and employment.
