Overview

Game Art at DMU gives you a distinctive mix of creativity, talent and the very latest technology. Accredited by Skillset, the course was the first industry accredited game art design course in England.

Game Art is a specialist 3D art degree which develops 3D modelling skills, as well as further developing your existing 2D traditional art skills by learning industry standard digital tools and techniques.

Programme structure

Year 1
Game Production 1
Using 3ds Max you will learn the basics of 3d modelling through a variety of projects including building props, a character and a small environment. You will also learn to integrate your work into the Unreal game engine thus gaining first-hand experience of the games development pipeline.

Digital Art Practice 1
Using Photoshop and other digital origination tools, you will develop an essential set of skills and techniques to originate, develop and communicate ideas and support the production of textures as an essential part of the game production pipeline.

Traditional Art Practice 1
Excellent observation and technical skill is important to the games development industry. Building on your existing art education, you will develop your technical skill and aesthetic judgment through practical activities including regular life and observational drawing, as well the application of art theory.

Critical Stusides 1
You will gain an understanding of the historical contexts and future developments of computer games, technology, art and culture. Through seminars and lectures, you will develop the fundamental critical thinking skills you will need to effectively reflect upon your own work.

Year 2
Game Production 2
You will learn more advanced techniques for 3d asset creation, as well as covering Unreal engine topics such as lighting, level design and shader authoring to bring game worlds to life.

Digital Art Practice 2
You will build on skills developed in Digital Art Practice 1, and explore more technically advanced techniques including advanced Photoshop, texture generation, photobashing and the integration of 3D into the origination process.

Traditional Art Practice 2
You will advance your technical knowledge of composition, human anatomy and proportions. You will further develop your skill in the use of traditional drawing tools, materials, techniques and processes to produce technically accurate and aesthetically compelling artwork.

Critical Studies 2
Building on your experience in year one, you will further develop your understanding of games development as a creative and technical profession, and begin to develop a range of professional skills to enhance your employability with advice and guidance from academic staff, industry professionals and the careers team.

Year 3
Placement year

Year 4
Game Production 3: Professional Practice
Selecting from a range of industry-informed briefs, you will complete 3 short projects focussing on developing your specialism and producing industry standard game-ready assets.

Game Production 4: Personal Project
With mentorship from your academic supervisor and support from a technical instructor, you will write your own brief, giving you the freedom to showcase your abilities in your chosen specialism by producing an industry-ready portfolio.

Our graduates have worked for companies such as Atomhawk, the BBC, Blizzard, BMW, Capcom, Codemasters, Creative Assembly, Crytek, Deepsilver, Gusto Games, Headstrong, Honda, Jagex, Konami, Other Ocean, Playground Games, Razorworks, Rebellion, Riot Games, Rockstar North, Rocksteady Studios, Splash Damage, SEGA, Sony, and Ubisoft. Graduates are working as 3D artists, visualisation and VR artists, environment artists, character artists, concept artists, technical artists, team leads, studio managers, producers and directors. They have also produced their own original games, including Sodium, published by Sony.
