As a result of market globalisation it has become increasingly important to explore the international issues related to management as organisations seek to achieve sustainable competitive advantage through their human resource. The study of, and subsequent practice in, International Human Resource Management focuses on the need to be culturally sensitive in our management of people in a cross-cultural multi-national environment.
The programme has been developed for students who wish to, or already work within, a multi-cultural business. For those who are new to the field of Human Resource Management, the programme offers the opportunity to develop your knowledge and professional practice so that you are equipped with the ‘tools and techniques’ necessary to embark on a career in International Human Resource Management: for such students pre induction modules provide additional support. Alternatively, however, the programme also offers the opportunity for those who have been working in the field to expand their existing knowledge and challenge current practice. What is important is that you have a strong interest in Human Resource Management, you are enthusiastic, willing to work hard and have an ability to work independently.
This demanding, fast-paced and highly relevant programme focuses on developing the solid, practical, professional and interpersonal skills fundamental to the management of people. It also equips you with the ability to understand and critically evaluate current, individual and organisational practices within different cultural contexts so that you can provide solutions that add value to an organisation.
The MSc in International HRM is a modularised programme taught over one year, full time. In the first two semesters you will study a range of human resource topics and develop your crosscultural skills as well as achieving the generic postgraduate goals of strategic awareness, developing leadership potential and understanding the theory and practice of international business.
You will be given the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of HRM, for example Development, Reward, Managing Diversity or Global Economics, through a choice of options. In the remainder of the programme you will engage in some ‘real-life’ work based problem-solving as you research and complete an International HRM Management Report Dissertation. You will be appointed a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal prior to embarking on the dissertation itself.
A considerable amount of pre-reading is expected for the taught sessions, as directed by the programme tutors. You will also be expected to spend approximately 16-24 hours of independent study outside the classroom.
The MSc in International Human Resource Management is a modularised programme taught over one year, full- time. The programme is divided into two semesters. In the remainder of the programme students complete an International Human Resource Management report dissertation, supported by a series of workshops designed to provide knowledge and skills to underpin the whole programme.
The management report requires participants to apply and extend this knowledge through the examination of a clearly defined researchable question. You will be appointed a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal in Semester Two. The time scale for completion is normally one semester.
