Aberystwyth University offers a wide range of Joint Honours schemes that allow you to study two subjects that best suit your interests. In choosing to study English Literature and Art History at Aberystwyth University you’ll immerse yourself in two rigorous and challenging disciplines combining both practical and theoretical elements. Through your study of English Literature you will develop your critical and interpretive skills as you respond to language, form, genre and cultural and historical contexts. Through your study of Art History you’ll have the rare opportunity to combine the historical, curatorial and (for those who wish) the practical study of art. Art History students also benefit from access to the School of Art’s Museum and its internationally renowned collection of artworks. Our course will provide you with advanced skills in reading, analysis, writing and presentation; all transferrable skills that are valued by employers in the current market.
The English and Art History degree at Aberystwyth allows you to explore texts, images and cultures that fire your imagination, from the early medieval period to the present day. We offer you opportunities to engage with a wide variety of approaches to language, literature, image and cultural history, combining critical thinking with scholarship. The course will encourage you to read widely and to think critically about art, language, writing and its contexts alongside philosophical and political trends that impact upon the ways we communicate and interpret. Consequently, in addition to essay writing, the presentation of seminar papers and active learning through participation in seminar and workshop discussions will be important parts of your work here.
