This joint honours in Computer Science and Mathematics will expose you to the world of advanced mathematics and the fundamentals of computer science, balancing theoretical study and practical computing.
Our computer science courses are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) on behalf of the Engineering Council, which means that they meet industry standards and requirements, giving you a head start when you enter the competitive jobs market.
The Department of Computer Science is also designated a Centre of Excellence by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Department of Enterprise, Innovation and Networks and in the most recent Research Excellence Framework comparison (REF2014) the Department produced more world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*) research than any other university in Wales. REF 2014 also assessed the impact of research on society, industry and government policy and the Department delivered 100% of its research impact at the top 3* and 4* level, demonstrating that our research makes a real difference in the world outside academia.
The Department of Mathematics maintained its position as one of the best departments in Wales in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014). The department returned almost 90% of our staff, the highest proportion of any Welsh mathematics department. Results show that 1 in 8 of our research outputs are world leading, and more than 60% are either world leading or internationally excellent. All of our research and the impact it has outside universities, was judged to be of international standard.
A degree in Computer Science and Mathematics will be particularly valuable in employment situations which require specialist numerical skills and logical and analytical thought. The Computer Science component will prepare you for a variety of careers in software design, communications and networking, computer applications, web development, IT consultancy and management, systems analysis and development, computer sales and marketing. The Mathematics component will prepare you to work for organisations such as the Office of National Statistics and the Meteorological Office. Career paths such as accountancy and banking, risk analysis and actuarial work, finance management, investment analysis, information technology, research and lecturing are also open to you.
