Overview

Language training begins in the first year. If you have A Level Spanish, you’ll take an advanced course that covers speaking, writing, translation and comprehension. If you don’t have A Level Spanish, you will take a beginners’ course, designed to bring you up to speed quickly.

First years also study social, political and cultural aspects of Spain and Latin America. Optional modules include Portuguese and Catalan.

Second-year modules explore literature, art, pop culture, society and linguistics. For example, you might study the politics of conformity in Franco’s Spain and the cinema of the Hispanic world. Your language training continues, preparing you for your year abroad.

You will spend your third year working or studying in Spain or a Latin American country. Recent placements include internships at a corporate services firm in Panama, marketing and events in the Canary Islands and volunteering in Costa Rica. You could teach English in a Spanish school or study at a leading university.

When you return to Sheffield for your final year, you’ll be confident, energized and inspired. Optional modules allow you to explore your own interests in more depth. For instance, you could take a module in translation studies, study the Spanish media or analyse films adapted from Spanish literature.
