Overview

Joint honours degrees provide you with the maximum flexibility to study subject areas that really interest you. This gives you the opportunity to study your two favourite subjects within one degree course.

Our course combinations are designed so that what you learn in one subject will complement and enhance what you learn in the other. In your final year you can choose either to split your time evenly between your two subjects, or to specialise in one subject more than the other.

English

Our English degree combines a diverse curriculum with open-minded thought and a thriving arts scene. We offer expert teaching and the transferable skills which make English graduates so popular with employers.

Our English degree revolves around a spine of modules that provides a supporting framework to the three-year course. The modules have been designed to expand your skills in:

reading
debating
writing and editing English texts
in developing individually researched ideas.
Student choice is an important consideration in organising a varied and dynamic curriculum which is why we offer a broad range of optional modules. You can focus your studies on a variety of modules in areas including:

the British tradition
American literature
women’s writing
new literatures in English.
This course is taught by a team of eminent researchers, critics and writers. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) 87% of NTU English Language and Literature research was assessed as world leading or internationally excellent. For you this means that the course is informed by the latest thinking and you’ll learn from people with a real passion for their subject.

TESOL

This course will help you to learn how to plan and deliver English language lessons. These skills will be learned in interactive workshop classes taught by experienced languages teacher trainers using current language teaching methods. You will have the opportunity to practice and gain vital experience through teaching in the classroom.

On this course you will explore features of the English language and linguistics and will shadow a foreign learner of English. You will also have the opportunity to take the Teaching Knowledge Test, a globally recognised qualification for English Language Teachers (subject to an exam fee).

Spend a year abroad

Students studying a language can choose to spend a year abroad, allowing you to increase your foreign language fluency and understanding of other cultures. You will come away with an experience that will give you a real advantage when competing for the best jobs.

Your optional Year Abroad takes place during Year Three when you can spend time working or studying at one of our partner universities. View our year abroad film above.

Programme structure

How will I learn?
Each year students choose a range of core and optional modules from the lists above. The first year is normally divided equally between the two joint honours subjects but at the end of Year One, students have the opportunity to select between an equally weighted joint honours course and a more specialised pathway depending on their interests.

Teaching principally takes place through a combination of:

lectures (where tutors introduce the key ideas)
seminars (organised on the basis of smaller group discussion of those ideas).

Career opportunities

Your career development
This is a major part of the curriculum. Key transferable skills are emphasised and there are opportunities to develop links with organisations and potential employers. As a result we have an outstanding record of graduate employment.
Joint honours courses develop a wide range of skills. These include:
