Overview

This combined degree allows you to combine interests in Film and Spanish Studies. Film studies look back to film’s 19th-century origins and forward to today’s innovations in digital technology, offering you a large field in which to explore the role of cinema across different social, historical and cultural contexts. You will study a diverse range of filmmakers and influential movements, from Alfred Hitchcock to Pedro Almodóvar, and from French, German and Spanish cinema to contemporary US cinema. Film studies employs a multitude of interpretive tools, from sociological approaches to close textual analysis.

In Spanish you will complement your language learning with a range of modules on literature, contemporary culture, history and linguistics. The emphasis is on choice. You will be able to select from a range of options in areas of study that interest you most. While a degree combination that includes a language already enhances your employment prospects, this programme builds a series of study skills that are vital for succeeding in the world of work. These include expressing arguments in oral and written form, managing time, thinking and working independently and in cooperation with others. In both Film and Spanish the university also offers you the opportunity to conduct primary research using a number of concepts and methods. Practical modules on the Film Studies programme familiarise you with essential film-making and editing skills.

Career opportunities

Career skills are embedded throughout every stage of study. We carefully explain the skills taught and offer a number of optional employability modules.

A year abroad gives you the chance to achieve something away from education-centred activity, such as gaining relevant work experience to help form your future plans. With many employers now expecting extracurricular or voluntary experience, this can prove vital.

Daniel Greenway, a graduate of Film and French at Southampton, progressed to work on major Hollywood productions Batman Begins and The Da Vinci Code. “My time at Southampton was invaluable in developing my critical approach to film-making,” he said. “It’s vital for anyone who wants a career in the creative side of the industry”.
