Overview

Virtually every part of our everyday lives is influenced by materials – transportation, housing, clothing, recreation and food processing. This programme draws on the expertise of staff in the Engineering Materials Research Group, which is actively involved in a broad range of activities in the materials field. You will have the opportunity to explore the selection of materials in design and manufacture, and develop an understanding of how these materials behave in service.

The selection of appropriate materials in design and manufacture, along with an understanding of how those materials behave in service, is fundamental to mechanical engineering. Advanced materials options will help you develop an in-depth knowledge of the properties of different materials, including composites. You will learn how to identify solutions through the application of sophisticated surface coatings or materials that can adapt to their environment. You will also have the opportunity to investigate the modelling of material behaviour – an essential ingredient of engineering design at an advanced level.

Programme structure

The first two years of this degree are common with the MEng Mechanical Engineering (H301), followed by specialisation in years three and four through a range of subject themes.

Modules include Manufacturing, Materials for transport, Failure of materials & components, Biomaterials, Microstructure & surface characterisation, Composites engineering & structures, Surface engineering, Tribology, Engineering design, Finite element analysis, Aircraft structures and Advanced management.

In the third year you will do an individual project, and in the fourth year you will participate in a group design project in which you will work with engineering students from different specialisms. Graduates of Mechanical Engineering programme are in high demand among employers from the private and public sector, and have entered careers including: graduate mechanical engineer, Royal Naval officer, associate (chartered accountant), helicopter engineer, applications engineer, consultant, graduate design engineer, research consultant, associate (management consultant), and development engineer.
