Overview

Where is the world going in the twenty-first century? Will new wars break out over competing ideologies, or ever-scarcer natural resources? Can the community of nations agree about how to deal with the new threats to our security? Do states naturally tend to want to co-operate or to compete? And how important is the nation-state anyway now in an era of intense globalization? The BA International Relations and Security Studies offers you the opportunity to study in detail the international system, the relations between nation states and the relations that states have with non-state actors such as international, transnational and civil society groups and organisations. The Charter of the United Nations has an ideal of International peace and security but what kind of security matters? That of states and the international system, or human security? We look at political, military, criminal, environmental and economic threats to peace and development and examine how new security threats come into being.
