Overview

Are you passionate about the planet, interested in animal welfare, keen to fight injustice or inspired by the arts? Would you value great career progression, scope to work overseas, flexibility to explore different disciplines, a hugely supportive network? Be inspired by lecturers who bring their own first-hand experience of working with charities.

Our course leaders are drawn from the profession. We also invite a regular programme of leading industry guest speakers, so you are always learning from the cutting edge of fundraising, vital in a profession that doesn’t stand still. You’ll also have opportunities to attend industry conferences exploring live issues, learning and networking with fundraisers.

We teach in small groups of up to 25 students. Each module is normally supported by a weekly workshop of 2.5 to 3 hours. In addition there are regular one-to-one and group tutorials, alongside your own self-guided study. Our emphasis is on the development of problem-solving, analysis, self-management, and interpersonal skills.

The Charity Development degree is an integral part of our School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership (SEMAL), which makes our course flexible and allows you to tailor the content to suit your interests. You’ll soon discover the skills you learn are highly transferable.

Programme structure

Some of the modules you might take, will include:

The Third Sector
Fundraising Then and Now
Event Planning design and creation
Grant-giving Trusts
Major Donor Fundraising
Community and Events Fundraising
Project Management
Experience in the workplace

We believe that completing academic assignments, self-guided studies and taught sessions will bring you closer to your goal of being a professional fundraiser, but being part of a professional team that is actually making a difference will inspire you to exceed your expectations. Our internship rogramme is not compulsory but we really encourage and support you in finding an opportunity that offers new perspectives. You will be free to dedicate one day of each week during the semesters of years one and two to your internship or another ‘learning through doing’ activity. We will encourage you to work with at least three different organisations over the course of your degree.
