Our degrees in Chemical Engineering will suit students wanting to enter the oil and gas sector or other traditional chemical industries; our courses in Chemical and Bio-Systems Engineering contain more biologically based material and so are more geared to working in the pharmaceutical, water or food sectors; and our Chemical and Petroleum Engineering programmes (which include oil-specific modules and a major project on gas or oil) will be relevant to those aiming for a career in the oil and gas industry.

One of the unique features of these programmes is the opportunity for you to put the theory learnt in lectures into practice in our purpose-built facilities. This hands-on approach is further enabled by our highly regarded Professional Training placement programme.

Developed in consultation with industry, our modules combine traditional chemical engineering topics with multidisciplinary design, biochemical engineering and sustainability; and prepare you to meet the challenges of the pharmaceutical, healthcare, energy, waste management, oil and chemical industries. With compelling environmental, biological and life sciences content, we will equip you with the expertise to make informed future technical and scientific decisions.

Programme structure

Year 1 (FHEQ Level 4)
In Year 1, we provide you with a strong base in the scientific fundamentals of chemical engineering. The first year is common across all of our programmes.

Year 2 (FHEQ Level 5)
In Years 2 and 3, we deepen your knowledge of core chemical engineering subjects. This allows you to consolidate a strong common set of competencies whilst developing your specialist skills and understanding. In Year 3, you also undertake a pathway-specific process design project and an equipment design project.

Professional Training placement (optional)
Most of our students take a Professional Training placement, which provides an outstanding opportunity to gain practical experience, giving you a head-start in your future career. Companies that have participated in our scheme include Heatric, BP, British Sugar, ExxonMobil, GlaxoSmithKline and Shell.

Year 3 (FHEQ Level 6)

Career opportunities

Chemical engineers work across a range of sectors in the UK and overseas, and are increasingly sought by speciality chemical industries that manufacture high-value-added products. Chemical engineers on average earn more than any other engineering discipline and graduates are consistently paid more than chemists and other scientists. The high salaries paid reflect the level of responsibility and importance which chemical engineering graduates quickly attain.
