SURREY LEAPS TO NUMBER 12 IN TIMES LEAGUE TABLE

Surrey is now ranked number two in the South East, second only to Oxford. The league table is based on performance in a number of key areas, covering student satisfaction with the quality of teaching and academic feedback, course content and facilities, graduate job prospects and the quality of research. The Times and Sunday Times also shortlisted Surrey as one of five finalists for the University of the Year.

This follows hot on the heels of Surrey’s success in entering the Guardian’s University League Table’s top ten for the first time in June this year, achieving 8th place. Ten subjects taught at Surrey were also awarded top ten places in the Guardian’s subject league tables, with Tourism and Hospitality occupying the number one position for the fifth consecutive year.

The secret of Surrey’s success is student satisfaction, which has been growing by leaps and bounds, contributing to a continuing and impressive rise in the overall league table. In the recent National Student Survey (NSS) scores, final year students at the University of Surrey rated themselves happier than ever; 92 per cent of students expressed satisfaction with the quality of their course. These scores put the University amongst the top nine Higher Education institutions for student satisfaction.

Recent changes in the Higher Education sector, such as the rise in tuition fees, have made this a challenging time for many universities. Yet Surrey has seen applications increase by about a third year-on-year, outpacing the national average by a factor of 10 and leading to a rise in the calibre of students – the average undergraduate has now achieved AAB grades at A-Level.

Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, said: “I am delighted by this result, which alongside our recent high ranking in the National Student Survey reflects our continuous improvements in teaching, research and the student experience to strengthen our position as a leading university in the UK.”
