Overview

Health care is the world’s single largest industry, with a global
turnover of more than $5 trillion, a global workforce of 60
million, and an impact on every man, woman and child on the planet.

It is a natural focus for journalists. In almost every country health
and health care are staple issues for media reporting, yet very few
journalists covering health and health care have any specialist
training in what is a potentially complex and wide-ranging area. This
MA aims to fill part of that gap in knowledge.

Healthcare is a natural focus for journalists whether this be human
interest articles, reports of new cures or investigations, controversy
over health care systems and reforms (such as those in the USA), or
political arguments over resources (as in the UK, Ireland and many
other countries in the current economic climate).

The Health Journalism course draws on our established links with the
fields of print and broadcast journalism, including staff research,
publication and journalism on health policies at national and
international level, and health campaigning. It also draws on the
University’s established expertise in the field of Health, through
the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

The course incorporates the Contemporary Issues in Health module in
which you join with health professionals on MSc courses to study the
social, economic, political and organisational context of health and
health care.

This module and the course as a whole offer you the opportunity to
produce work relating to your interests in health, health care or
health policy while also developing a core of generic journalistic
skills and knowledge required by the profession. You study the
essentials of journalism, ranging from legal issues to practical
writing, broadcast and web skills.
