The course is intended for those who already have a degree and a portfolio that includes collections in accessories or who hold a sound professional background. The focus of the master’s is on the creation of a line of accessories in which the aspects that characterise ‘made in Italy’ have been considered, from design to production. Learners will explore how Italian manufacturing is exemplary throughout the world for its identification of the potential of materials, and will apply that knowledge to successfully balance design and function with a sophisticated aesthetic. Thanks to this course, learners will have the chance to meet the most important Italian companies in the industry.
The course begins with the design of a collection of accessories tied to the concept of ‘decorative’ luxury. Learners will be taught about techniques in the application of materials to products, ideas and prototype exploration. They will also analyse the managerial and marketing aspects of the discipline, and will carry out research into the history of luxury accessories. Design ideas will be applied to a women’s accessory collection linked to a leading Italian brand. During the project, students will explore the concept of ‘hidden luxury’ associated with ‘made in Italy’, paying great attention to heritage values and manufacture and the inter-seasonal nature of the design product.
After the study of costing and production processes associated with the marketing of a design product, students will put together a coordinated collection that includes a diverse range of accessories; bags, purses, shoes and small accessory items. The final project will be carried out in collaboration with a prestigious Italian company. On completion, the head of style and product managers will assess the creative development of the project, looking at research, trend analysis, the impact of visual communication and the construction of the prototype. The designer and creator of accessories has complete technical knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of materials and the appropriate design and production of the accessories associated with them. Professionals are able to interpret fashion trends and brand image in the production of accessory goods, and respond to the demands of the market with forward-thinking proposals. They are also experts in techniques that add value to traditional materials. Designers are able to transform shoes, bags, belts into new iconic objects.
Accessories designers work for their own brands, or in one of the many companies that work in accessories, footwear or in the general areas of leather goods. They can work in research and trend forecast studios or with fashion houses, either haute couture or prêt-a-porter. Their advanced knowledge of marketing strategies and production logic opens doors for work in the world of project management and product management in companies that are specialists in this segment of the market.
