The BSc (Hons) Air Transport with Pilot Training is suitable for students who are interested in a career in the air transport industry or in related fields, such as Air Traffic Control, where a practical knowledge of flying would be an advantage. Mature students or those currently employed in the industry can benefit from the opportunity to update their skills and knowledge and explore the full range of opportunities for employment in the aviation sector.
All students undertake basic theoretical and practical pilot training and may pursue this as far as the Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) level. The PPL qualification provides added value and enables those who, at a later date, wish to continue their flying career to study further towards the award of a frozen Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).
Buckinghamshire New University has historically been the leader in the field of aviation degrees with pilot training and this course remains at the cutting edge of provision in the sector. In this respect, our highly innovative programme of study is unique in the UK Higher Education sector and firmly aims to reflect the continuous change inherent in the air transport industry and prepare students with the knowledge and skills required to work within the aviation field.
The course has therefore been designed to reflect the way in which air transport industry operators are increasingly seeking a more highly skilled workforce where the generic and transferable skills are broadly distributed across the organisation. Students on this course also have the opportunity to acquire specialist knowledge in the area of airline and airport operations, participate in UK and overseas educational visits and use of real life case studies to support interactive teaching and learning programmes.
Developed with input from industry professionals, the programme focuses on trends shaping the aviation industry today and for the future. It is forward looking and will remain fully responsive to the ongoing changes taking place in the aviation industry. An important component of the course is the opportunity to undertake a substantive period of work placement within the aviation industry.
All students with career aspirations of working in the air transport industry are welcomed to attend one of our University Open Days. At the Open Day we will provide a wide range of useful and informative information concerning our Pilot Training degree. It is an excellent opportunity for students to meet staff and other students already on the course to ask further questions.
