Accredited by The Institute of Biomedical Science

You will gain the appropriate knowledge and advanced laboratory
skills to apply for careers in the biomedical science field, including
those relating to the diagnosis and management of human disease, and
laboratory careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • Accreditation from the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
  • Applied Biomedical Science is approved by the Health Professions
    Council (HPC)
  • The opportunity to apply for entry into National Health Service
(NHS) Health Care Scientist registration training programmes
  • Placements in laboratory settings and in other fields such as
  • Academic staff who have hospital laboratory experience and are
active in research and bring this into their teaching
  • Hands-on experience of a wide range of techniques in modern,
well-equipped laboratories which give you the expertise and skills
required to compete in the graduate job market
  • A focus on student-centred teaching in which you can take part in
mini-projects where you devise and carry out your own laboratory
experiments. This will ensure that you can demonstrate to future
employers that you can work independently and solve problems
  • Guest lecturers who are currently employed as biomedical
scientists in hospital laboratories to teach areas such as
    haematology, virology and clinical biochemistry

You will cover the key foundations of biomedical science including:
diagnosis and pathology of disease, molecular biology, genetics, cell
biology and microbiology.

Laboratory work is a substantial component of the course, enabling
students to learn a wide range of techniques in modern, well-equipped
laboratories and help them develop the key experimental, data handling
and reporting skills required in biological careers.

Considerable focus is also placed on graduate-level skills which are
essential when you apply for jobs.

Career opportunities

Graduates of our course can apply for entry into NHS Health Care
Scientist registration training programmes, which can lead to higher
qualifications in specialist areas and to management roles.

It is also possible to use your qualifications to progress into
teaching in schools, colleges or universities, and we can offer
opportunities for work experience and project work in schools to help
with this career direction. Many of the skills you gain during your
degree, such as group working and problem solving, will also be
attractive to employers in many non-biology based careers.

Successful completion of Applied Biomedical Science course provides
eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professionals
Council (HPC). It is a legal requirement that anyone who wishes to
practice using a title protected by the Health Professions Council
Order 2001 is on the HPC Register.
