Overview

COURSE SUMMARY

This course provides you with a wealth of knowledge in design/making
skills and expertise, all required to work in the fashion industry.
Graduates have gone on to enjoy careers as fashion designers, fashion
buyers, fashion stylists, pattern cutters, graders, production
managers, garment and CAD/CAM technologists, merchandisers,
forecasters and textile designers.

Whilst this award is principally conceived as the means by which you
might embark on a career in the fashion industry, the skills and
creative design experience offers the potential for you to work
independently as a designer.

During the course you will:

  • Benefit from dedicated studio spaces within a lively and
    stimulating environment, equipped with a sewing machine for every
    student
  • Work on live industry projects with professional fashion designers
  • Enjoy excellent garment-making facilities with full access to
    digital photography, computer facilities and high-quality
    screen-printing
  • Experience professional practice and personal development
  • Explore fashion design with a focus on technology
  • Experience research trips abroad, such as our annual trip to Paris
    Fashion Week
  • Have the opportunity to showcase your work on the runway at our
    Graduate Fashion Show

CAREER MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Careers development is integrated into the course and the course
seeks to provide you with an awareness of the real world context of
the creative industries in general and Fashion Design in particular.
You will be helped to develop a strategy for obtaining appropriate
employment at the end of your course.

Professional practice will be emphasised as part of all learning
units but a work-related learning unit especially will help you to
become more focused on managing your career.

You will be helped with the preparation of a professional portfolio
as well as a CV (curriculum vitae) and material so that you can market
yourself.

CAREER/FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

This course provides you with knowledge, and design/making skills and
expertise that are transferable within the fashion and clothing
industry. Career directions may include; Fashion designers, fashion
buyers, fashion stylist, pattern cutters, graders, production
managers, technologists, merchandiser, forecasters, textile designers,
CAD/CAM sample makers.

Whilst this award is principally conceived as the means by which you
might embark on a career in the fashion and clothing industry, the
skills and creative design experience offers the potential for you to
work independently as a designer.

As you will be used to thinking and working creatively and critically
with a keen sensitivity for visual communication, employment in the
wider creative industries may also be an option.

Further study:

Specialist Postgraduate courses in fashion design and related
technologies, critical theory or education.
