Overview

Whether you wish to specialise in canonical artworks or in forms of visual production like an advertisement or YouTube video, this interdisciplinary master’s program will develop your ability to research and analyse visual culture thoroughly and critically.

Some unique features of the Research Master’s specialisation in Art and Visual Culture

- The combination of courses on visual culture and seminars on the theories, methods, and current directions of the humanities as a whole encourages you to look at your field from different perspectives.
- The research programme, which will prepare you for PhD research, includes the writing of a publishable scholarly article and a proposal for a PhD project.
- A personal tutor will supervise you in your development as specialist in your field.
- The Master’s specialisation strongly encourages you to go abroad for at least a semester.

Programme structure

The Master’s specialisation in Art and Visual Culture is part of the Faculty of Arts. It has a course load of 120 EC* (two years). The structure of the programme is presented here.

Career opportunities

This programme is primarily intended to prepare its students for an academic career, in particular as PhD researchers. About half of the graduates find such a position in the Netherlands or abroad. The other half also do well and often find academic research-oriented positions. Examples of the latter include:

- Researcher at a cultural or scientific organisation or research centre
- Assistant of a senior researcher
- Teacher at an institution for higher education
- Policy-making official in the fields of culture and science
- Editor in the field of historical or cultural scholarship
- Staff member of a publishing company or text agency, usually with regard to scientific, historical or cultural journals
- Curator of a cultural heritage institution or in the museum sector
- Consultant for a political party
- Journalist or critic
