Overview

The UK is the world’s prominent financial centre. Government figures show financial and insurance services contributed £119 billion. in gross value added (GVA) to the UK economy in 2017 – 6.5% of the UK’s total – with half of this accounted for in London.
Our Financial Economics course provides a specialist focus on financial systems, such as the role of banks and the operation of stock markets, both here in the UK and within an international context. Sharing a common first year with our other economics courses, you will have the opportunity to gain a strong grounding in economics concepts and principles, before specialising in the area of financial economics.

Through a focus on contemporary economic debate and the applications of economics, our course can help you to develop the quantitative skills and real-world expertise to support your employability upon successful graduation. Former graduates of the course have gone on to find successful careers in areas such as financial services, accountancy, consultancy and specialist tax roles.

Career opportunities

In addition to the financial sector, economics graduates are employed in a range of sectors and roles. They work in manufacturing, transport, communications, consulting, charitable organisations and public services such as the National Health Service (NHS).

Students at Coventry can benefit from our long-established links with HM Treasury and other government departments, which currently offer internships, that can be undertaken during your optional Placement Year or outside of term time, as well as a unique mentoring programme for our students. Each academic year second year students have the opportunity to be paired with employees of different departments and can explore a variety of tasks and career opportunities, receiving assistance in the design of their curriculum vitae with a view to future employment. Please note, the unique mentoring programme is subject to a competitive application process and availability.

Upon successful graduation, you should possess an in-depth knowledge of economics theories and models, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and mathematical ability. You should also demonstrate a wide range of desirable professional skills, including: team working; critical evaluation; self-directed learning; problem-solving; action planning and organising; written and oral communication; questioning and listening. The following personal qualities will also be addressed in each of the skills modules: achievement orientation; initiative and creativity; self-confidence; decisiveness; reflectiveness; adaptability and flexibility.

On successful completion, you should be well placed to pursue a wide variety of careers in investment banking, accountancy, tax consultancy, government economists, auditing, derivatives trading, management consultancy, mergers and acquisitions, and many more.
