Overview

In 2017 we will be launching our new LLB programmes. Designed with students in mind, our programmes will enable you to take charge of your degree. From the second semester of your first year until you complete your studies, we’ll be providing you with a wide range of choices in the optional modules, allowing you to specialise in an area of law of most interest and benefit to your career. Importantly, we will ensure that you still graduate with a Qualifying Law Degree.

Take a law degree that allows you the opportunity to spend time studying abroad and earns you a qualifying law degree (QLD) Develop an understanding of the country’s legal system, substantive law and culture on your way to becoming a legal professional.

This LLB European Legal Studies course is part of the Erasmus exchange programme and you can spend your third year studying law in another European country.

The LLB (Hons) European Legal Studies Programme, aims to provide up to 20 Southampton LLB students with an opportunity to combine their UK undergraduate studies with a year abroad, by studying law in a European jurisdiction. Participating students complete the LLB programme in four years and are awarded the degree of LLB (Hons) (European Legal Studies) in recognition of their European legal skills. The degree is still a Qualifying Law Degree, for the purposes of undertaking further professional training.

Programme structure

First year:
You will study four core modules: Legal System and Reasoning, Contract Law, Criminal Law, and Public Law – Sources, Principles and Institutions. In semester two 2 option modules are to be taken from the options list. In addition you will take part in a rich legal skills programme that includes Team Building and Mooting.

Second year:
You will study three core modules: The Law of Torts, Property Law and Public Law 3. Two optional modules are to be taken from the options list. All students are involved in a comprehensive careers and employability programme during the second year, together with further opportunities to practise mooting, negotiation and Streetlaw.

Third year:
You will spend this full academic year abroad, at a designated European University, (see below), thereby becoming a participant in the Erasmus+ Exchange programme. During this year, students study aspects of the legal system and substantive law of that country, taking four modules or equivalent in each semester, resulting in a total credit of 60 ECTS.
It is important that students have a high level of proficiency in the language of the country they plan to visit and an A level standard or its equivalent is required, where the taught language is not English.

In your final year:
All students complete the compulsory Legal Research and Writing module, after which they research and complete a legal dissertation with the guidance of a supervisor. This allows students to explore an aspect of the law which is of particular interest to them. Students will also take three optional modules in both semesters from the options list.

Career opportunities

A law degree can open many doors outside of the profession. About half of our law graduates seek careers in the legal profession, as solicitors or barristers after further study and training. The others enter careers in criminology, business, human resources, international relations, journalism or education – following postgraduate study and/or relevant work experience.

Our LLB programmes are formally accredited by the Law Society of England and Wales and the Bar Council of England and Wales as qualifying law degrees (QLD) for students wishing to undertake further professional training to become solicitors or barristers. They are also accredited for practice in many countries worldwide, including India, Australia, Canada and Malaysia.

Our international reputation is high among employers because of the emphasis placed on the development of academic, personal and professional skills.
