Aberystwyth’s History / Mathematics Joint Honours provides the opportunity to study both subjects in two separate departments. In choosing to study History at Aberystwyth you’ll immerse yourself not just in a huge choice of history, but also gain an understanding of how and why the world has evolved the way it has. This course is student-focused and you’ll be able to build on your existing knowledge of history whilst pursuing what fundamentally interests you. Mathematics, on the other hand, will allow you to explore one of the supreme achievements of the human mind. The subject has fascinated thinkers throughout the ages, from the ancient civilisations of five thousand years ago to the present day. It is an evolving, living discipline; the boundaries of mathematics have expanded way beyond the geometry and number theory of the Greeks and the algebra of the early Indians and of Islam. Mathematics has been called “the Queen of the Sciences” by one of its greatest practitioners, KF Gauss and today, mathematics has invaded the territories of all scientific subjects. Science without mathematics is unthinkable.
History and Mathematics have been taught at Aberystwyth since the foundation of the University in 1872, making them the oldest History and Mathematics departments in Wales. Over the last 140 years we’ve perfected the degree schemes we offer you to ensure that you get the best degree you possibly can.
We are currently NOT ACCEPTING applications from NON-EU countries, except Georgia and Serbia.
