Overview

Mechanical engineering is essential for the automotive, aeronautical, robotics, construction, software, oil/ gas, manufacturing, renewable energy and building services sectors. There are currently shortages of mechanical engineers and, by taking this course, you’ll have plenty of career options.

The first year of the course provides a foundational grounding in engineering. You’ll then study more advanced principles of mechanics, manufacturing technology, energy systems and engineering design, potentially working on projects with companies such as Nissan, BAE Systems and Airbus. We encourage you to spend a full year in industry between your second and final years.

This BEng (Hons) course will meet part of the academic requirement to be a Chartered Engineer, which is associated with higher salaries. You can meet the requirement in full by studying for an additional year and gaining an MEng (Hons). If you know from the start that you’d prefer an MEng, please apply for MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering instead of this course.

Career opportunities

By the end of this course you’ll be in an excellent position to become an engineering professional. Engineering is a growth industry and currently there is a shortage of engineers. 90% of our graduates are in work or study within six months of graduating and, of those in work, 80% are employed in a professional or managerial job (Unistats 2015).

If you wish to undertake further study at postgraduate level, it may be possible to transfer to our MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering – though, because it’s an integrated masters degree, you would usually apply for it when you first apply to Northumbria. We also offer various other MSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering and related disciplines.

Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.
