Overview
Our ‘Business With’ courses develop broad business skills while also offering a subsidiary pathway (around 33%) that starts after the first year, giving you an extra edge in employability.
BA (Hons) Business with Economics includes modules that enable you to gain an understanding of macroeconomics, business economics and economic development as well as the application of economics to contemporary issues. There is no requirement to have studied economics before.
The course is covered by the prestigious AACSB accreditation for Newcastle Business School, which was ‘Business School of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015. We’re also undergoing a full re-accreditation process with EPAS who require some of the highest levels of relevance, rigour and internationalisation.
All of the Business with programmes are 3-year degrees with an optional 4th year between the second and final taught years. This additional year can be spent undertaking a work placement, study abroad or a hybrid of the two. Students who do not take this option will be expected to undertake a final year UG Consultancy Project rather than the dissertation. In doing this, they are then graduating having followed a “real—world” experience as part of their undergraduate studies.
Career opportunities
By the end of this course you’ll be in an excellent position to apply for graduate training schemes and graduate roles. Thanks to your specialist studies in economics you’ll have a particular edge in roles related to business analysis and strategy. Business economists are in high demand from organisations that need experts to analyse data and trends to support strategic decision-making.
If you decide to start your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.
You can also undertake further study at postgraduate level with a course such as our International Development MSc.
Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.
