The automotive industry, which includes successful manufacturers like Nissan, Honda and Jaguar Land Rover, needs engineers who can work on design, production, and research and development.
The first year of the course provides a foundational grounding in engineering as well as introducing aspects of vehicle design. From the second year the focus is more fully on automotive engineering. Modules that are unique to this course include ‘Performance Modelling for Road & Racing Cars’, ‘Energy Sources and Storage’ and ‘Automotive Design and Analysis’. We encourage you to spend a full year in the automotive industry between your second and final years.
This BEng (Hons) course will meet part of the academic requirement to be a Chartered Engineer, which is associated with higher salaries. You can meet the requirement in full by studying for an additional year and gaining an MEng (Hons). If you know from the start that you’d prefer an MEng, please apply for MEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering instead of this course.
Your course in brief
You will study core modules in Engineering Science, Engineering Analytics, Vehicle Design, Materials Engineering & Performance, and Professional & Technical Communication Skills.
You will begin to specialise with modules in: Mechanical & Structural Systems, Powertrain & Chassis Systems, Fluid Systems, Engineering Management & Economics, Manufacturing Technology & Systems, and Drive Cycles & Vehicle Performance Modelling.
You will have the option to go out on an industrial placement to put the skills you have learned in the previous modules into professional practice.
You will study modules in Vehicle Dynamics, Automotive Design & Analysis, Vehicle Aerodynamics, and Automotive Control Systems & Mechatronics. You will undertake a major Investigative Project in a topic of your choice.
By the end of this course you’ll be in an excellent position to become an automotive engineering professional. Engineering is a growth industry and currently there is a shortage of engineers. The UK government is stressing the importance of skilled, qualified engineers to the future of business and industry.
If you wish to undertake further study at postgraduate level, it may be possible to transfer to our MEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering – though, because it’s an integrated masters degree, you would usually apply for it when you first apply to Northumbria. We also offer MSc degrees.
Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.
We are currently NOT ACCEPTING applications from NON-EU countries, except Georgia and Serbia.
