Overview

You’ll choose two major languages and one minor. We teach French, German, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese. Italian and Luxembourgish are also available as minor subjects. Optional modules explore the culture and society of countries where your chosen languages are spoken.

All our students spend their third year abroad, in two different countries. We offer more choice than a lot of universities – destinations include Cuba, Quebec and Cracow. You could study at a European university, work as a teaching assistant in a school or go on placement with a company.

When you return to Sheffield for your fourth year, you’ll be ready to build on your experience with more advanced language classes and academic modules.

A modern languages degree at Sheffield is a confident first step into a wider world. Your time here will broaden your cultural horizons. You’ll learn to communicate fluently in at least two languages. Most importantly, you’ll develop a sophisticated understanding of the countries where those languages are spoken.
