Overview

History explores a rich array of past cultures- ancient, medieval and modern. It sharpens your insight into how societies functioned in the past, encouraging a more critical awareness of the problems of the present.

A BA in French and History allows you to pursue a wide array of historical interests while studying the most widely spoken native language in Europe. Knowing French will give you the edge as a budding historian as it offers access to an expansive French-speaking scholarly literature and primary sources relevant to European and international history. In French you will complement your language learning with a range of modules on history, literature, contemporary culture and linguistics. The emphasis is on choice. You will be able to select from a range of options in areas of study that interest you most. Whilst a degree combination that includes a language already enhances your employment prospects our programme builds a broader range of study and communication skills that are vital for succeeding in the world of work. You will learn to absorb, analyse and assess a wide variety of viewpoints, and express arguments in oral and written form, and to think and work independently and in cooperation with others. You will learn how to do primary research yourself, applying a range of concepts and methods. In History we offer students the chance to take part in our innovative ‘group project’ course, which provides a unique opportunity to work as a team and to present the results of your research to the general public.

Programme structure

In all years of study you will benefit from the wide range of resources (including extensive electronic and televisual facilities).

Your year abroad is an opportunity to improve linguistic and cultural proficiency in your chosen language and to demonstrate your ability to work independently over a sustained period.

Career opportunities

Employability is embedded into modules from the first year onwards, right from the first lecture. The university offers a number of optional employability modules.

Your specialist skills in intercultural communication, listening and language will be highly valued by employers.

A year abroad gives you the chance to achieve something away from education-centred activity, such as gaining relevant work experience to help form your future plans. With many employers now expecting extracurricular or voluntary experience, this can prove vital.
