Overview

French is a key international language, native to France, Belgium, Switzerland,
Canada and the French Caribbean, and an official language in much of Africa and Asia.

Combining French with Portuguese gives you the opportunity of studying two influential European cultures and their hugely important languages. Studying Portuguese and French at Southampton offers you real insights into the cultures and societies of the Luso-Brazilian and French-speaking worlds, and sharpens your understanding of their commonalities and differences.

At Southampton, the emphasis is on choice. In both languages you will complement your language learning with modules on literature, history, film, cultural studies and linguistics. You can choose to combine these areas of study for a broad-based curriculum, or focus on the area that interests you most. Apart from acquiring linguistic competence in Portuguese and French you will build skills that are vital for post-university life and valued by employers. You will learn to absorb, analyse and assess a wide variety of viewpoints, express arguments in oral and written form, and think and work independently and in cooperation with others.

It is also possible to study Portuguese ab initio in this combined honours course and with the accelerated language stages you will reach graduate-level language competence. Strong candidates with grade A in French A level but no previous knowledge of Portuguese will be considered for accelerated undergraduate-level Portuguese language courses.

Programme structure

In all years of study you will benefit from wide range of resources (including extensive electronic and televisual facilities).

Year one modules provide an introduction to the study of cultural forms, political and historical issues, and linguistic issues.

In years two and four you will have the opportunity to concentrate on your own particular interests, selecting from a range of more specialised modules on Spanish- and Portuguese- speaking societies.

A special module in year two will prepare you for your year abroad in year three, and for the academic work you will complete during this year.

Your year abroad is an opportunity to improve your linguistic and cultural proficiency in your chosen language, and to demonstrate your ability to work independently over a sustained period.

Career opportunities

Employability is embedded into modules from the first year onwards, right from the first lecture. The university offers a number of optional employability modules.

Your specialist skills in intercultural communication, listening and language will be highly valued by employers.

A year abroad gives you the chance to achieve something away from education-centred activity, such as gaining relevant work experience to help form your future plans. With many employers now expecting extracurricular or voluntary experience, this can prove vital.
