Overview

Marketing activities should play a central role in delivering value to both customers and shareholders. In this context ‘marketing’ can be seen as being at the interface between the customer and the organisation – it interprets the needs, desires and changing values of customers for the organisation and at the same time presents the organisation’s response in terms of services or products to the customer. Modern marketing requires analytical, numeric and data management skills as well as the creativity traditionally associated with marketing.

The BSc International Marketing degree will provide you with an up-to-date knowledge of international marketing that is grounded in both marketing theory and practice. The focus is on delivering value internationally for both customers and shareholders using technology in both the management of customer experience and in engaging with customers through digital media.

The programme is four years in duration and involves an international placement year in your third year which is compulsory for all students. The international element of the BSc International Marketing degree programme is delivered through a partnership with an international partner university, where their students study along with you in Southampton in your second year, and you study abroad (in France, Spain, Vienna or Hong Kong) along with their students in your third year. You will then return to the University to complete a 4th and final year of study.

Thus, the programme will introduce you to exciting new developments in international marketing practice and provide you with skills that are in great demand from employers.

Programme structure

This full time BSc International Marketing programme will normally be completed in 4 years, comprising 6 14-week semesters at the University of Southampton, of which there are 12 weeks of full-time taught study followed by examinations. In addition, a full year of academic study will be undertaken at an international partner university. Both the University of Southampton and the international partner university will assist in the organisation of all placement issues, academic and administrative. The placement year is a compulsory year, although ECTs points are not included in UK degree programme. Students are required to pass this year according to the requirements of the host institution. The international exchange is a vital means of adding value to the Marketing programme, making it a real International Marketing degree.

Career opportunities

The anticipated destination of students in this programme is management roles in a wide range of private, public and third sector organisations (including social enterprises), particularly those with an innovative bent. A small number of students may form their own businesses on graduation, or within a few years of graduation.

The intent of the BSc International Marketing programme is not to encourage too-early business formation, but to develop wider enterprising competencies that will enable employability in a range of organisations. Understanding better quality venture creation should be the result for students who choose this path.

Southampton has an enviable record for producing high-calibre graduates who move quickly into good careers soon after finishing their studies. The latest survey of Management graduates showed that 89 per cent were employed or undertaking further study six months after graduating.
