Overview
This course is focused on the hospitality and tourism industries as areas of academic study and it is taught by dynamic team of highly qualified staff. It is also underpinned by work of world-class researchers based at the University.
The scale of the hospitality and tourism industry warrants the attention it has increasingly been given. Its complexity, as well as distinctive demand and supply characteristics and its interplay with a variety of academic disciplines other than economics make it a rewarding subject of study. It has a sufficient framework of theoretical concepts to justify its study as an academic discipline in its own right.
These international industries are increasingly recognising the need for better management, career structures and staff retention and therefore moving towards a graduate management labour force. This programme therefore orients itself on practical issues, but it does not neglect to provide some grounding in theory and discussion of theoretical issues. It is designed to develop your intellect and stimulate your imagination, as well as to increase your transferable skills base and powers of understanding. You build on your skills of communication, problem solving and analysis, research and evaluation. You are encouraged to develop a creative and enquiring approach to work and arising issues, as well as honing your powers of judgement. You will become aware of your abilities and developmental needs. Last, but not least the course will help you establish a sound knowledge base of many aspects of the industries involved, as well as develop an attitude of enthusiasm for working in a hospitality and/or tourism environment.
Programme structure
The course will be underpinned by academic theory in the fields of hospitality, tourism, leisure and events and will involve you and your peers in the application of concepts in industry-related scenarios and realistic simulations. In this way, you will develop and apply the skills of critical evaluation and it is intended that you will become self-directed, independent, reflexive learners.
