Overview

The degree in Human Resource Management equips students with knowledge and skills in a range of related areas. These include, for example, recruitment and selection, leadership, personnel management, training and development, employee relations, coaching, performance management, and reward strategies.

Programme structure

This course enables you to acquire the relevant knowledge and skills to make you an effective manager of people, no matter what area of business you choose to work in, as well as an HRM professional, able to impact on the quality of people’s working lives and on their contribution to the performance of their organisation.

This degree will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills to prepare you for a successful career in a complex and ever changing business world, whether you intend to work in human resource management or any other area of business.

In the first year, you will study a range of management-related subjects, designed to ensure you have a broad foundation and knowledge of management, joining with students from a range of business-related degree routes. You will consider the human, legal, economic, financial and technology-related issues managers are faced with, and the tools and techniques they use.

The second year focuses more specifically on key aspects of human resource management, such as training and development, employee relations and leadership, as well as giving you the opportunity to choose from a range of other modules, to meet your particular interests.

The third year (or fourth, if you have taken the opportunity for a year’s professional placement after year two) moves to consider in greater depth the strategic importance of HRM in the creation and management of successful innovative organisations, as well as providing the opportunity of a ten-week work placement, which can be used as the basis for the management research project which is a key feature of the final year.

Career opportunities

As a successful graduate, you will be equipped to enter a range of professional and business careers, as well as specifically human resource management.

Recent graduates have joined organisations in both the private and public sectors, such as:

You will also be able to progress to professional HRM qualifications with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and to post-graduate study at Masters level.
